Famous Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passed away after a long battle with cancer

Famous director Kalpana Lajmi passed away on today morning around 4:30 am at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. She was 64 and had been fighting with kidney cancer since 2017.

Kalpana Lajmi was an Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter. Lajmi was an independent filmmaker working more on realistic films, which are known as parallel cinema. Her films were often woman-oriented. She had been worked as a manager with famous singer/lyricist Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. She died on 23 September 2018 at 4:30 am. She was 64. She was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2017.

Kalpana Lajmi was the daughter of painter Lalita Lajmi and niece of filmmaker Guru Dutt, debuted as an assistant director under the veteran film director Shyam Benegal who was also her relative of the Padukone family. Her most critically acclaimed work was 'Rudaali' (1993) starring Dimple Kapadia. She directed many more famous pieces like - 'Darmiyaan: In Between' (1997), 'Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence' (2001), 'Chingaari' (2006).

Celebrities around the industry are paying tribute to Kalpana Lajmi in social media. Manoj Bajpayee tweeted "Sad a very sad news.may her soul rest in peace.#restinpeacekalpanalajmi". Huma Qureshi tweeted "Deeply saddened... at around 4:30 am today morning #KalpanaLajmi passed away .. May she rest in peace." West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also tweeted "Saddened by the passing away of acclaimed filmmaker, producer & screenwriter Kalpana Lajmi, who stood for breaking new ground in Indian cinema with films like ‘Rudaali’. My condolences to her family and admirers".
