He always celebrated his life saying 'I am one year younger than what I'll be in next year'. Veteran Film Maker Mrinal Sen left his last breath at 10:30 in the morning today at his home in Bhawanipore, Kolkata. Dadasaheb Phalke winner director was suffering for a long time due to old age. He was 95 years old.
Mrinal Sen made his first feature film 'Raat Bhore', in 1955. It had the iconic Uttam Kumar who was not a star then. The movie was a let-down. His next film 'Neel Akasher Neechey', earned him local recognition. His third film 'Baishey Shravan', was the first film that gave him international exposure. After that, his name was announced many times in almost all the international film festivals. During his career, Mrinal Sen's films have received awards from almost all major film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Moscow, Karlovy Vary, Montreal, Chicago, and Cairo. Retrospectives of his films have been shown in almost all major cities of the world. He was also elected as the president of the International Federation of the Film Societies. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1983 for his unrivalled works in the film industry.
Mrinal was born in Faridpur in Bangladesh on May 14, 1923. After completing high school in Bangladesh, Sen came to Kolkata. He studied physics at Scottish Church College. He got a post-graduate degree from the University of Calcutta. He started working along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak. Most of his work is known for its artistic depiction of social reality. Although the three legendary directors shared a healthy rivalry, they were ardent admirers of each other's work.
