If you have a Vivo smartphone, you could be another victim of Chinese fraudulent activity. The Cybercrime cell unit of Meerut Police has filed a case under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Vivo India after thousands of smartphones were found with the same IMEI number.
In September 2019 a police officer from Meerut tried to exchange his Vivo smartphone. That time he discovered that his Vivo phone's IMEI number was different from the number on the box of his phone. So he contacted Cybercrime division and lodge a complaint.
The Cybercrime branch was investigating this for the last five months. During the investigation, it was found that as of September 24, 2019, over 13,500 Vivo smartphones were running on the same IMEI number and were active in different states across the country.
IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is a unique identifier for each and every phone, which helps law enforcement track lost phones or help in catching criminals. When people use the same number on various devices it can cause many problems in authentication and also for law enforcement.
